I’ve had my microlocs for four years and i had never detoxed my locs, so i had years of build up. I’ve used Bentonite clay masks mostly as a face mask to pull out toxins from my skin. I’ve tried this mask a couple of times back when I had natural hair, And both times results were satisfying, especially after using a deep conditioner.” Also Few days ago, I used bentonite clay mask to detox my daughter’s hair. before diving in lets see why detoxing is essential to healthy Locs

importance of detoxing locs

Detoxing microlocs is important for several reasons:

  1. Removing Product Build-Up: Over time, products like oils, creams, conditioners, gels, and even shampoos can accumulate within microlocs. This build-up can make them feel heavy, dull, and greasy. Detoxing helps to remove these residues, keeping your locs light and vibrant.
  2. Maintaining Scalp Health: A clean scalp is crucial for healthy hair growth. Detoxing helps eliminate dirt, sweat, and dead skin cells, promoting better oxygen flow to the hair follicles and reducing the risk of scalp issues like itchiness or dandruff.
  3. Preventing Loc Discoloration: Product build-up and environmental pollutants can cause microlocs to appear dull or discolored over time. Detoxing helps to restore their natural sheen and vibrancy.
  4. Improving Moisture Retention: Detoxed locs can better absorb moisture and nutrients from oils, sprays, and conditioners. This is particularly important if you follow a routine aimed at keeping your locs hydrated and healthy.
  5. Preventing Odor: Over time, sweat, oils, and environmental factors can cause your microlocs to develop an unpleasant smell. Detoxing helps eliminate trapped odors.
  6. Promoting Loc Maturity: As microlocs mature, detoxing can help ensure they tighten and strengthen properly without being weighed down by unnecessary buildup.
  7. Enhancing Styling and Maintenance: Clean, detoxed microlocs are easier to style and maintain. You’ll find that your hair feels fresher, more flexible, and healthier overall.

clay mask detox recipe

I made a basic clay mask using Bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar. I didn’t use any specific measurements; I just mixed what I thought was enough paste for my Hair. I had to make more paste because of how much hair I have—actually, I had to make it twice.

but here is a basic clay mask recipe for medium length mcrolocs

  • 1 cup bentonite clay
  • 1/2 cup ACV
  • few drops tea tree essential oil for scalp health and build up removal
  • Mix to a smooth paste.

When using Bentonite clay, avoid using metal spoons and containers because it can  reduce the effectiveness of the clay.

step by step bentonite clay mask application

Before applying the mask, I shampooed my hair to remove excess dirt and buildup from oils, styling products, and sweat. I hadn’t washed my hair for two weeks, so there was a lot to clean up.

To avoid using too much product, I diluted my shampoo:

  • one part shampoo, three parts water.

application;

  1. apply the paste Thoroughly on locs and scalp in sections.
  2. leave it on for 20-30 mins
  3. Rinse thoroughly with running water until it’s completely out.
  4. Follow up with a moisturizing deep condition.

this can be a very messy process, so wear something that you Don’t mind messing

my experience

at the end of the detox session, my locs felt like it had more build up. i thought maybe if i could oil it, it might give it some slip, but the next day it felt even worse, it had cakey like texture. there was visible leftover clay mask yet i rinsed thoroughly.  I ended up shampooing my locs the next day to get it all out.

what i learned

  1. being the first time to actually detox my microlocs, i had years of build up. a proper detoxing routine is essential
  2. shampooing microlocs after rinsing bentonite clay mask is absolutely Necessary, as locs tend to suck in products and traps them
